THE SURROUNDING AREA

There are many beautiful places to visit in and around Whitby, here are some that may be of interest.

North Yorkshire Moors - The moors can look spectacular when covered in heather and what better way to get some fresh air than a walk on the moors. You can visit the Moors Centre in Dandy to find out who works for them and what animals live among them. You can also see the countryside in a different light by taking a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Ruswarp - A small village where you can find: rowing, canoeing, golfing, a mini-railway track and it is also a good spot for feeding ducks.

Robin Hoods Bay - This is a small fishing village about 7 miles out of Whitby. It is an interesting village with plenty of hide-aways to explore. It is also good for fossil hunting.

Sandsend - This is a small sea side village on the outskirts of Whitby. It is popular with the tourists in the summer and the locals enjoy surfing here.

Goathland - A village on the moors which is home to an old railway station, still in use, there are often themed train rides, for example 'Thomas the Tank Engine Day' which is very popular with children and adults in most case! It is a good spot for walking and is visited by thousands upon thousands every year. It is more well known as 'Aidensfield' in the popular television series 'Heartbeat'.

Saltwick Bay - This is a very picturesque little beach which is an excellent place to find fossils.
