Exams cost between £32 and £105 and are NOT included in the course fees.

Where could it lead?

The course could help students who want to enter a University or College and require Cambridge Advanced or IELTS. It is also suitable for students who want a certificate of their ability in English for their work or job applications.

Duration: One term - minimum 10 weeks

Who is it for?

Age range: The minimum age for students in the school is 17, but there is a wide range of ages on our courses and we welcome families with children, single people and couples of any age.

Level: We accept students at all levels.If you have not studied English very much, then we recommend that you come for two terms before you attempt to take an exam such as First Certificate.

Course description

Course: This course is designed to prepare students for English Language Exams e.g. First certificate, Advanced, Proficiency, PET, KET or IELTS.

  • Up to 15 hours per week General English and exam preparation classes.

  • 5 hours per week afternoon programme

  • Needs analysis and personal tutorial

  • End of course certificate

  • You will need to buy your course books.

Group size: Average class size is 11 students, with a maximum of 14. 

Entry Requirements: There are no entrance requirements. We test every new student when they arrive and put them into a class at a suitable level. Beginners should come at the start of a term.

Staff: Teaching and activities are led by Functional English staff.

Choosing an exam: When you start the course, we will test you and advise you on the most suitable exam for you.

Closing date for exam entry: Normally 2 or 3 weeks after the beginning of our exam course.

Social programme & activities

There are some FREE social activities:-

Afternoon excursions: once a week e.g. Whitby town, St Mary’s Church, Yorkshire Coast Path, North York Moors Centre, Countryside walks, Sea trip.

Evening activities: Busy social programme in afternoons and evenings to help you make new friends e.g. a sports event or competition, an entertainment evening or a special meal.

Some activities you will need to PAY for:-

A Saturday trip e.g. a walk, a city trip, a visit to a heritage or a visitor attraction; A visit to a theatre, cinema or concert.

Sports activities e.g. swimming pool, mini-golf, horse-riding, cycle hire, rowing, gym.

There is normally an optional 3 or 4-day excursion at half-term e.g. to Edinburgh.

 

 

Exam preparation

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE EXAMS      

Certificate of Proficiency (CPE): This examination is for very advanced learners who have an academic background, considerable maturity and sophistication of thought as well as a very good command of English in all the four skills. A pass at Proficiency level is very highly regarded and is accepted in some countries towards a teaching qualification.

Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): This examination is aimed at learners who already have the First Certificate or a high level of English and tests all four skills. Some universities and colleges would accept a good pass at CAE as an entrance qualification. At least 6 months study beyond First Certificate level.

First Certificate in English (FCE): Probably the best-known Cambridge exam, this examination is aimed at Upper Intermediate learners, testing all four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. Some students come for two terms (6 months) to prepare fully for this exam.

Preliminary English Test (PET): This exam is suitable for good elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate learners. It serves as an excellent preparation for the First Certificate, testing all four skills.

Key English Test (KET): This is for beginners or very elementary learners. It tests all the four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

 

 

 

OTHER EXAMS

IELTS  (International English Language Testing Service) – If you want to go on to study at a University or College in the UK you may need to take this test. For most academic courses you will need to get a score of at least 5.5; more demanding courses may require 7.5.

TOEIC/TOEFL - We can help students to apply for these exams in American English.

  • Conversation techniques to help you make friends through English.

 

Christian Life course - Christian study e.g. Bible Study, Mission and Overseas Aid.

Business English - Business English e.g. Jobs, Meetings, Presentations, Letters, Sales, Work etc.

Creative Arts - Creative Arts e.g. Painting, Fabric & Textiles, Photography, 3D modelling

Teaching Methods - Teaching methods i.e. practical ideas for teaching adults, children, languages or Bible classes.

History and Culture - British History and Culture e.g. Whitby Past & Present, British Society, British Folk Music or English Literature

Music and Singing - Theory and practical of music e.g. Singing, Music-making, Beginners Guitar, Music Theory

Accommodation

Meals

Students eat all meals with their hosts, and hosts provide a packed lunch for students to take to school. The school has facilities for students to get hot drinks and a microwave oven to heat up meals. Hosts will do their best for any students who are vegetarians or need medical diets.

Christian activities

Each day starts with 25 minutes of Christian worship. Enjoy the fellowship and care of a Christian school. Join our regular fellowship evenings in the school and attend a local church service. All Christian activities are optional.

Travel

We advise students on travel arrangements and can arrange airport transfers if necessary.
