Who is it for?

We know that many people over the age of 50 would like to study English but are worried that they will feel out of place studying among young people.

Age range: All students on this course will be over 50 years old. We try to create a family atmosphere in the school and you will share your morning classes with other students. The minimum age for students in the school is 17, but there is a wide range of ages on our courses and we welcome families with children, single people and couples of any age.

Level: We accept students at all levels.

Course description

Morning programme

15 hours General English per week including grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Course:  

  • 15 hours per week General English and exam preparation classes.

  • Needs analysis and personal tutorial

  • End of course certificate  

  • Includes course materials for afternoon lessons.

  • You will need to buy your course books.

Group size: Average class size is 11 students, with a maximum of 14. We require a minimum of 6 participants before we can run this course.

Entry Requirements: There are no entrance requirements. We test every new student when they arrive and put them into a class at a suitable level. 

Staff: Teaching and activities are led by Functional English staff.

Social programme & activities

Afternoon programme

Excursions: The course includes trips to places of interest in Yorkshire e.g.

  • Whitby Abbey   

  • Castle Howard – historic house and gardens   

  • Robin Hood’s Bay

  • OR The walled city of York and York Minster

 Evening activities:

Busy social programme in afternoons and evenings to help you make new friends

  • Fellowship evening or games night

  • Sports: Bowls, tennis, golf, bowling, swimming, horse riding, walking, cycling can be arranges as required.

  • End of course dinner in a restaurant (extra charge)

  • Concert, Theatre or Cinema visit  

Afternoon excursions: three times a week e.g.

  • Whitby town, St Mary’s Church, Yorkshire Coast Path, North York Moors Centre, Scarborough Town, North York Moors Railway

  • Traditional high tea in a moorland hotel or lunch in a country pub

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Accommodation

Meals

Students eat all meals with their hosts, and hosts provide a packed lunch for students to take to school. The school has facilities for students to get hot drinks and a microwave oven to heat up meals. Hosts will do their best for any students who are vegetarians or need medical diets.

Christian activities

Each day starts with 25 minutes of Christian worship. Enjoy the fellowship and care of a Christian school. Join our regular fellowship evenings in the school and attend a local church service. All Christian activities are optional.

Travel

We advise students on travel arrangements and can arrange airport transfers if necessary.
