There is always a lot happening at Functional English:- 

  • We have a Social Organiser who arranges activities.

  • You can enjoy walks in the beautiful North York Moors National park and the Cleveland Way coastal path.

  • You can enjoy eating and talking together with other students.

  • You can enjoy social evenings, like a Barn dance in a real barn!

Other activities

What can I do in Whitby? There are some FREE social activities as part of our General English course. These may include:-

  • A mid-week trip e.g. the walled city of York, Rowing on the River Esk at Ruswarp, Beacon Farm Ice-cream, sea trip on the old Whitby Lifeboat, the Captain Cook Museum.
  • A sports event or competition e.g. a darts match, volleyball, a table tennis competition, aerobics, fitness centre visit.
  • An entertainment evening: e.g. a barn dance, scottish dancing, themed video seasons, a quiz night, a welcome or farewell evening, an International Song Contest, a karaoke evening, a fancy dress party, a Christmas Presentation, a Host family evening, Fireworks evening.
  • A special meal: e.g. a Beach barbecue, Bonfire night barbecue, Burns Supper, Fish and Chips, Pancake Day (incl pancake race), Strawberries & cream, Ice-cream walk, Christmas dinner.
There will also be a programme of activities which you will need to PAY for:-
  • A Saturday trip e.g. a walk, a city trip, a visit to a heritage or a visitor attraction.
  • A visit to a theatre, cinema or concert. 
  • Sports activities e.g. swimming pool, mini-golf, horse-riding, cycle hire, rowing, gym.

Where can I go? So that you can see the best places in Yorkshire and the North of England, we organise a programme of Saturday trips: -

January to March Term
  • Whitby Abbey, St Mary's church and the Abbey visitor centre
  • Coastal walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby, along the Cleveland Way
  • Coastal walk from Sandsend to the village of Lythe 
  • Cinema and Shopping in Middlesbrough
  • Half term Weekend trip to The Lake District
  • Jorvik Viking Festival in York
  • Forest walk in the Dalby Forest
  • Visit to Scarborough including the Castle, shopping etc.
  • ‘Heartbeat’ walk to Goathland and Beck Hole

March to June Term

  • Daffodil Walk in Farndale
  • 9thApril Good Friday (no lessons)

July and August Term

  • Coastal walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby, along the Cleveland Way
  • Visit to Scarborough including the Castle, shopping etc.
  • Flamingoland Theme park
  • Sunderland International Airshow
  • Christian Aid Sponsored Walk
  • Whitby Regatta – local Whitby Festival
  • Visit to York
  • 'Heather' walk on the moorland around the Hole of Horcum and Newtondale

September to December Term

  • North York Moors bus trip
  • Autumn walk in the Mulgrave Woods including the ruins of Mulgrave Castle
  • Visit to Castle Howard
  • Visit to North Yorkshire Moors Railway
  • Cycling on Whitby-Scarborough coastal cycle trail.
  • Half Term Weekend trip to Scotland
  • Forest walk in the Dalby Forest
  • Coastal walk from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby, along the Cleveland Way
  • Visit to Scarborough including the Castle, shopping etc.
  • Cinema and shopping trip to Middlesbrough
  • Visit the ruins of Mt. Grace Priory and climb Roseberry Topping
